Hi!
Merry Christmas!  Happy New Year!

Today discovered a third book review for Beyond the Ocean's Edge: A Stone Island Sea Story.  I have no idea of who the reviewer is, and I like that.  Looks like it was written by someone who bought it on KINDLE.  (It's the one dated in December.)

The latest posting on the USS Constitution Museum's blog "Log Lines" has a bit of seafaring humor dating back to the early days of the US Navy.

The Science Fiction book I'm reading, The Lost Fleet: Dauntless, by Jack Campbell, is turning out to be a great read, in my opinion of course.  As I mentioned in my last visit here, it is quite a bit like reading a naval adventure from the age of sail.  There is also a blurb on the front, stating that it should appeal to HORNBLOWER fans!  The book manager at the South Hill Hastings pointed it out to me when I first went there to put my book in the store.

Glad the weekend is nearly here!

Oh, the poor painter-- falling into the water! Every little world has it's own words.

My husband was luckier than some-- he had doen sailing and sailboat racing with his dad. He at least knew fore from aft and a head from a halyard! And he knew how to swim. There were those who joined the Navy who did not.

I hadn't heard (or read) the one about the painter before. I have a book about the end of the Barbary wars, (includes Lord Exmouth's bombardment of Algiers) and mentions the bit about all the names of the American squadron. Also mentions that as the War of 1812 ended, both American and British naval officers gathered to watch fireworks for George Washington's Birthday.

During that time, very few seamen were able to swim.
